From DIY fraud kits through to unlicensed gym candy, darknet markets are home to purveyors of all manner of illegal and semi-legal products and services. Each market category has subcategories and several related items are offered for sale on each, making AlphaBay one of the most popular and unique dark web marketplaces since it operates both as a classic marketplace and a data store. This makes it valuable for both conventional crime and cybercrime actors. AlphaBay’s marketplace and forum are also available on the darknet I2P. The marketplaces are usually managed by an admin or a small group of admins, and the typical users of the marketplaces are cybercriminals who search for illegal products online that will help their own illicit activities.
What is darknet monitoring?
A dark web monitoring service continuously scans the dark web to make sure an organization's content and data are safe from cybercriminals. It monitors the dark web 24/7 to quickly detect when sensitive information goes into the hands of criminals.

Darknet Markets: The Dark Web’s Thriving Black Markets Revealed
A darknet market is an online marketplace on the dark web that operates similarly to legitimate e-commerce websites, but with one key difference – it allows users to buy and sell goods and services anonymously. These markets can only be accessed using special software that anonymizes users’ internet traffic, such as Tor (The Onion Router).
How do Darknet Markets Work?
Important Tips For Using A Darknet Market
Darknet markets operate on a hidden network of websites that are not indexed by traditional search engines. Users can browse these sites using Tor, which encrypts and bounces internet traffic through a series of relays to maintain anonymity. Transactions on darknet markets are typically conducted using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Monero, or Ethereum to further protect users’ identities.
How much is malware on the dark web?
As of March 2023, premium-quality malware attack services could sell for up to 4,500 U.S. dollars per 1,000 installs on dark marketplaces or vendors. In turn, a DDoS attack on an unprotected website lasting for a month had an average price of 750 U.S. dollars.

Currently the alleged founder of Silk Road is serving a life sentence in the United States for computer hacking, laundering and the conspiracy to traffic narcotics and fraudulent identities. It was reported that AlphaBay was ten times larger than Silk Road and generated a billion dollars in sales in its three-year history. AlphaBay at the time of its takedown had over 200,000 users and 40,000 vendors selling everything from drugs to attack services. AlphaBay’s forum was also a hotbed of illicit activity involving users buying and selling leaked databases and stolen credit cards.

We showed that some product types exhibit a strong prevalence discrepancy between dark markets and seized goods. Specifically, watches are more prominent on dark markets, while electronics, shoes, clothes, and Tobacco are more prevalent among seized goods. Furthermore, vendors seem to favor high-value products with big profit margins (e.g., watches) instead of products for which higher turnovers are necessary (e.g., Tobacco) to obtain the same revenues. Interestingly, we found some similarities in shipping origins between dark markets and seized goods, with some exceptions, such as relatively high origin shares from the US in dark market counterfeits. One approach to help address this would involve the identification of products that are found to be offered on darknet markets before their official release on the surface web.
Credit card skimmers, RFID readers, and cloning devices are also sold. In the quantitative questionnaire, we applied a trust scale of 21 items developed based on previous research results on legal and illegal online purchase transactions. These empirical studies focused on the trust factors in online purchasing, which consumers considered indispensable for safe online shopping. To facilitate the application, we have created seven categories and classified the trust factors into these categories (see Table Table11). Yet in August of last year, AlphaBay’s number-two administrator and security specialist, publicly known only as DeSnake, suddenly reappeared, announcing AlphaBay’s resurrection in a new and improved form. Now, 10 months later, thanks in part to a tumult of takedowns and the mysterious disappearances of competing dark web markets, DeSnake’s reincarnated AlphaBay is now well on its way to its former heights atop the digital underworld.
The category of individual and community factors includes items related to the popularity, recommendation, and reliability of the seller and the platform. Customers’ trust and propensity to buy depend on the perceived reliability of the online retailer (Thaw et al., 2009) and acceptance of the given web market (Karimov & Brengman, 2014). The reputation system consists of customer ratings, reviews of products or services purchased, number of visitors, and number of purchases.
The owners, who had apparently gotten sick of constantly mitigating DDoS attacks, transferred the $13 million worth of customer cash in Empire’s escrow to their own accounts and shut down the site – a move widely known as an Exit Scam. Four years later, an original AlphaBay administrator and alleged co-founder known only as DeSnake re-opened the AlphaBay marketplace and continues to operate it today. Finally, despite its large size, the sample only allowed us to perform non-parametric tests due to the lack of normal distribution. The re-evaluation of the indicators applied in the questionnaire, taking statistical aspects into account, could help create a database suitable for running more robust parametric tests and developing models. Data cleaning and data analysis were made exclusively in IBM SPSS Statistics. The trust matrix was created by ordering the means of the importance of each trust factor.
